WPL TIMOR LESTE TOUR
CFC's Women’s Premier League team visited East Timor in May 2017. The purpose of the short yet historical trip was to promote women in sport and fortify the strong and close allegiance with the East Timorese female sporting community.
This year marks our 40th anniversary and to commemorate this milestone and celebrate the union between club and community, the Women’s Senior League team headed back to their roots in East Timor to play in friendly matches against local teams. The girls played games against FC PORTO & SLB BENFICA TEAMS which are made up of Timor national players.
As much as the tour was about playing football, the Women’s team also took the opportunity to give back to the East Timorese locals who do not live in similar fortunate circumstances as ourselves in Australia. A day trip to a local orphanage and hospital took place where the Women’s team spent meaningful time with the orphans and patients and handed out gift packs put together by the team. Visiting the orphanage and hospital not only benefitted the locals, but also served as a cultural awareness opportunity for the team. The girls also took over pre-loved football boots, donated by members of the Casuarina and Mindil clubs, to hand out to the less-fortunate footballers of East Timor.
Many of the players have never travelled outside of Australia - let alone to a 3rd world country - they have experienced a totally different culture and had an amazing experience of life starkly different to that of Australia’s. Also, not many women play sport over in Timor, especially football as they regard it as a man's sport, so this is a rare opportunity for our women.
A word from the FFNT CEO....
“Once again I’m amazed at the commitment of football’s volunteers. Here are a group of women and girls who have managed, despite all the other things in life like work, school, family and Club to organise a trip to Timor to play football as part of 40th anniversary of Casuarina FC. But typical of the women and girls involved, they're not just playing football they will take 100’s of kilos of equipment, balls, boots and more to assist the Timorese embrace our game, visit orphanages and actively help those less fortunate.
What wonderful ambassadors for our City.”
